Texas Life

Guest written by our friend Gladys Fuentes

Moving here to Texas has been a big adjustment for everyone, especially the kids. They really liked it back home in Georgia and we were reluctant to totally uproot them but it just made sense as my husband’s job offer was too good to pass up. We packed the boxes and drove the whole family out to the Lone Star state – he started work right away so I stayed in the new house and did things like look into Electric Companies Texas and talk to tile installers and work with the post office to FINALLY get all our mail forwarded. It was a long road but now that we’re generally settled in I feel much better about our decision to move out here. The weather is great and the people are just so nice – there’s a lot more diversity here than there ever was back home, too. I think it’s important for my kids to learn Spanish and there’s no better place than Texas and who would have guessed they’d like Mexican food so much?! I think I’m going to start looking for part time work soon enough so I can make a little extra money but also so I can get out of the house. I think it’s good for me to have been at home these last few weeks to get things in order but I’m really getting bored sitting around the McMansion all day and I need something to keep my mind on task. Who would have guessed I’d be the one without a day job when I was the major breadwinner for our family back home in Georgia? The kids love their new school and I’m just really thinking this was the best decision we’ve made for our family in a really long time, although it wasn’t an easy one. My family misses having us close but we’re making a great new life for ourselves here on this side of the border!
